Arts at the Armory is delighted to welcome Afropop sensation, Dobet Gnahoré, to the Spotlight Series stage on June 27 at 7:00pm!
With her majestic voice, fierce dance moves, magnetic stage presence, and colorful sense of style, GRAMMY-winner Dobet Gnahoré is one of Africa's most revered and respected talents. She appeals to fans of Angelique Kidjo, Yemi Alade, and Fatoumata Diawara. Backed by her band of four musicians, she will be touring in advance of the release of her newest album, Zouzou, produced by Momo Wang, one of Abidjan’s most in demand beat makers and producer for top international talents. Zouzou showcases Gnahoré's continuing efforts to draw on the creative energy of Abidjan, a bustling African metropolis that has emerged from years of conflict to become one of West Africa’s most important economic engines and creative centers.
Anyone who has seen Dobet Gnahoré perform knows that her performance talents lie in both music and dance. Dobet’s father Boni Gnahoré is a master percussionist and artist who co-founded the legendary pan-African performance ensemble and artistic collective Ki-Yi M’bock. Growing up in this creative setting was a utopian artistic experience for Dobet and a rigorous training ground that provided her with the skills in music, dance, theater, fashion and poetry that serve as her foundation to this day.
